For which State Board of Education position are you a candidate?

SBOE - 6

Why are you running for this position and what are three reasons why you think you are the best candidate running for this Board position?

I am running because I feel a calling to help strengthen education in Texas, since the current SBOE District 6 representative has been voting with Democrats. 1. I have a proven conservative voting record ...

What are the three biggest challenges facing the SBOE and how would you address these challenges if you are elected to the Board?

1. Our elected republicans are voting with democrats causing us to lose (or get really close to losing) realy big votes. I vote conservative. 2. Woke and liberal ideologies are currently plaguing our classrooms, there is damage to fix and work to be done. I have proven that I am willing to do the work. 3. As a trustee, I never heard from my SBOE member. A strong relationship with trustees makes for better ...

In your opinion, what are the three most important roles of the SBOE and if elected, how would you contribute to those important roles?

1. Setting curriculum standards, TEKS, and graduation requirements I will do the work, (like I did getting Intelligent Design in our curriculum) to remove the dei and liberal ideologies in our instructional materials and TEKS so our students have access to a good quality education with a love for ...

What experience do you have shaping education policy? Please note any offices you've held and legislation you've advocated for.

I've served as a trustee (and currently 1st VP) of the Conroe ISD School Board, the 7th-largest school district in Texas. Elected in 2022, I have worked to pass and rewrite nearly 100 education policies, working closely with our attorney and removing taxpayer-funded TASB to Texans for Educational Excellence, to realign policy with the values of our community. Policies like removing sexually explicit books and a policy about teaching about controversial issues like gender identity using only the name on the birth certificate, not teaching anti-patriotic, and increasing parental consent to a 30-day notice for human sexuality classes, to name a few. I have been present in the Capitol advocating for a special ed bill, a SHAC bill, a virtual school bill, and a foster care bill, and testified in a Senate education hearing in addition to my advocacy work with SBOE for Intelligent Design to compare and contrast with the Big Bang Theory, and working with them to get Bluebonnet passed.

The SBOE is responsible for the curricula of millions of students across the state of Texas. Please share how you plan to stand up for conservative values as a Republican member of the SBOE.

I will fight for conservative values in our curriculum, like I have shown I have proven as a Trustee. When it gets hard, when there's pressure, I will stand on Truth no matter what. I fought for Title IX when no one else did, I fought for ID when every other trustee said no. I voted for homeschoolers to be able to ...

The vote on the social studies TEKS is coming up this year on the Board's agenda. Explain what your overall goals are/would be for these curriculum standards.

The framework for the Social Studies TEKS was voted upon in September's meeting. On a Wednesday, our rep voted with the Democrats, who wanted a heavy globalist and world history, but it was last-minute changed on a Friday to a vote for a pro-Texas and US history. As they continue to write the specifics, we ...

Are standardized tests good or bad? Please explain fully.

Standardized tests historically have been quite bad, and sadly, moving the needle to adjust for falling scores has resulted in dumbing down education as a whole. I do feel we need to see where our students are to identify their needs and how to help them succeed. At Conroe ISD, we recently adopted what is ...

How much influence does the SBOE have on the actual classroom curriculum used? What is your plan to achieve that?

With the recent passing of legislation, all instructional materials are approved through SBOE. SBOE adopted a comprehensive suitability rubric and has brought in IMRA reviewers to help the process with HB 1605 and HQIMs.

The Texas Legislature has banned Critical Race Theory, Gender Ideology, and other Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion instructional materials from Texas classrooms. How will you ensure the law is upheld as you review and recommend textbooks and other instructional materials on the SBOE?

Having a watchful eye, doing the work, and standing strong, not sacrificing on values like the sanctity of life and LGBTQ inclusion, as I have already proven, I will stand for and remove on the local level.

How would you balance parental concerns versus academic freedom about controversial topics such as CRT or Gender Ideology

There should be no CRT or Gender Ideology, so there should be no parental concerns. If the parent wants to talk about that stuff at home, go for it.

What is your opinion of the Bluebonnet Curriculum and have you read the material?

Yes, vs the other HQIM, I love it and passed it for k-5 in the Spring. It is far superior to the other HQIM, and enriched with classical literature, phonics, and the science of reading.

What is your position about parental choice and charter schools?

Parents know what's best for their children. Pro-school choice does not mean anti-pub ed. My 6 children needed different paths. After having them all in public, one needed a private school setting, and one was homeschooled; the other 4 went (or are) public.

The SBOE has been charged by Governor Abbott with developing standards for books found in school libraries to prevent pornography from getting into the hands of our schoolchildren. What is your position on the development of these important standards?

Without a clear policy from the local school boards, since TASB is not going to do it, making books age appropriate is challenging without a rating system as voted upon in legislation. The policies needs to clearly define sexually explicit materials, harmful, and obscene.

We are seeing a lot of students and faculty across the state of Texas involved in child sexual abuse and assault in public schools. What is your opinion on how vetting employees is done and what can we do to change/improve the process for the better?

Schools should have zero tolerance. In our district, strict background checks are done for any employees and/or volunteers and continue. Reporting needs to follow the employee vs. just letting employees go to another district to keep things quiet.

What is your stance on LGBTQ topics in curriculum?

No place- at all. under no circumstances. I am pro-family. Parents can promote that at home if they choose. Jesus hung out with sinners, but he asked them to sin no more.

Should students be allowed to participate in "walk outs" (e.g. during BLM riots, illegal immigration protests, George Floyd protests?)

No, they should not be allowed

What is the State of Texas school system ranked in literacy and what would your plan be to make it No. 1 in the country?

Sadly, 37 for 4th graders. 44th for 8th grade. I am hopeful for the HQIM's in HB 1605, and the state. mandated suitability rubric and IMRA process for reviewing. We removed our prior ELAR curriculum for K 5, which had Lucy Caulkins and three-cueing, which is illegal, and added classical literature and the ...

The vote on the health instructional materials was held recently. If you are a current Board member, explain your votes. If not, explain how you would have voted.

We just re-wrote the policy to add additional days of consent from the mandated 10 days to 30 days. The slides are available for parents' viewing. I removed any gender neutral language, men can not have babies, and any gender identity talk. Also added a pro-abstinence, pro-family, and life curriculum.

How much access do you believe parents should have to their children's curriculum, classroom, teacher, and online materials?

Total and complete

Should the SBOE have total and final authority on what teaching materials are used in the classroom? Please explain fully.

Yes, they are elected by the people, as opposed to TEA, appointed. State oversight to ensure uniform values like Patriotism and alignment with state-approved standards. Locally, school boards are given a handful of HQIM's to choose from once it is funneled through the suitability rubric.

What law(s) related to education will you lobby the legislature to pass?

Improving educational outcomes Special ed funding School discipline ...

Among the nine justices on the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS), which one do you respect the most, and why? Which one do you respect the least, and why? What judicial philosophy should a SCOTUS Justice have?

Respect most- Thomas- pro-life, pro meritocracy Respect least- Jackson- can't define a woman Originalism

Would you be in favor of returning prayer to every classroom in the state?

Yes

Where does the separation of church and state have its origins?

The misinterpreted concept comes from Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. The Constitutition, particulary the First Ammendment, does not use this phrase. It does establish the church's right not be intereferd by the state. This is institutional seperation but not influentioal seperation. The ...

What is the Permanent School Fund (PSF) and how does it impact our public schoolchildren? What is the SBOE's role with the PSF?

The oldest (1854) and largest educational endowment in the country, with about 58 billion. Made up of state-owned assets like land (and its rights). The earnings fund textbooks, instructional materials, technology, and helps guarantee local school district bonds. Our district received 9 million this year so far.

Is there anything in your background of an embarrassing nature that should be explained before your election? (e.g., Arrests/Convictions? Bankruptcies?)

No.
