What are the three main reasons you are running for this office? Do you see any potential conflicts of interest?
I grew up in a law enforcement family, with my father and brother both serving as police officers. I have been a peace officer for 22 years. I have served at the Harris County and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Offices, where I have worked in the county jail, patrolled the community, and have worked as an criminal investigator. I have been a detective for the last 11 years which includes time in the Auto Theft Task Force, property, persons, and the Homicide/Violent Crimes Unit. I hold a Master Peace Officer Certificate with hundreds of hours of specialized training. I have an excellent working relationship with many of the elective officials and leaders in the county and believe that partnerships and cooperation are key to the success of Montgomery County in its service to the citizens.
Please describe what you believe are the most significant issues in this race, why and what you'll do to address them?
The lack of expansion for several years at the Pct. 2 Constable's Office has kept that agency from transitioning to a 24-hour police service. This is vital to providing adequate police service to an ever growing population, properly allocating resources where they are needed, and supplementing other agencies in the county during times of high call volume.
Furthermore, the number of people in Montgomery County experiencing a lack of permanent housing has risen 54% since 2017. There are an estimated 300 citizens of Montgomery County that are homeless and those are concentrated in the Conroe area of Precinct 2. Many are veterans or families displaced by recent natural disasters. As Constable, I want to create an initiative to build partnerships with public and private outreach organizations to help develop new law enforcement strategies in assisting those experiencing homelessness.
What is your position on the public's right to record police or other government officials on public property?
The United States Court of Appeals held that a private citizen has the right to record video and audio of police carrying out their duties in a public place. I am personally not offended by being recorded and feel that such recordings can not only discourage misbehavior but can also be evidentiary.
What is your position on dash/body cams & public availability of those videos?
Body and dash cameras are a benefit to both the public and law enforcement. Recordings of police interactions with citizens aid in disputes / complaint resolution, provide an accurate dipiction of an encounter and if improvements/ discipline are needed, and helps ensure contact is conducted on a professional manner. To maintain trust and transparency, citizens are intitled to review recorded police interactions if requested through open records and if there are no active pending criminal or civil investigations.
Who is endorsing you and what is their relationship to you?
I have been publicly endorsed by former Sheriff Joe Corley and Sheriff Tommy Gage. I served under Sheriff Gage in the criminal investigation division as a Detective in property, persons, auto theft task force and the homicide unit. My father, Wayne Eason, served under Sheriff Corley as Major over the jail and special services division from 1981-1993. My brother, Andrew Eason served under Sheriff Gage as the Captain over District 6/ The Woodlands Township and is currently the jail administrative Captain.
Please describe the concrete goals against which you want to be measured in the coming term.
I want to see the Constable’s Office expand to include additional proactive patrols and promote community oriented policing. It is my goal to provide 24 hour police services to the people of Precinct 2 and to supplement the patrol efforts of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Conroe Police Department, while efficiently and professionally carrying out the responsibility of civil process service.
Please list all civic, political, and union organizations or individuals to whom you have contributed in the past five years.
I am a member of MCLEA (Montgomery County Law Enforcement Association), CLEAT, Montgomery County Fair Association, and Montgomery County Republican Woman.
To what extent do you believe the state or federal government should be able to obtain court orders directing parents to do things for their children that the parent does not believe should be done?
Every case is subjective and every case should be possibly examined by professionals in that field, court analysis and enforced by court order if needed.
Please list all conservative groups for which you are or have been a member, and list any positions held in each group.
I have been a member of Montgomery County Republican Woman for approximately a year.
Please describe the changes you will make to improve the efficiency of the office for which you are running.
The efficiency of the office is a direct reflection of staffing. Currently, Pct. 2 Constables Office is only able to perform minimal functions such as civil process, sales, JP warrants and court. I plan to expand this agency to incorporate more community-oriented policing, proactive crime reduction, traffic enforcement, expansion of JP warrant service and patrol functions.
Please describe your position on the proper balance of parental rights and the welfare of the child. Please include a couple of examples.
A child’s welfare should always be of the utmost importance. I believe that parents have a right, duty, and obligation to have care custody and control of their children. Intervention by government into parental right need to be carefully monitored to not infringe on those rights while protecting children. Every case is situational and needs to be weighed in totality.
Instances where there are clear indications of abuse should be reported to family and protective services who work jointly with law enforcement to investigate into possible abuse.
Instances where there is no clear indication of abuse but only an allegation should still be looked at by protective services to determine if further investigation by law enforcement is necessary.
There are no clear lines for proper balance of parental rights. Society as a whole is always evolving and the standard by which we live in constantly changing. It is ultimately the duty of parents to offer a good baseline of morality and ethics to lead children into being productive members of society as an adult.
What's your position on red-flag laws, expansion of background checks to private firearms sales, imposing civil liability on sellers of firearms, or any additional regulation of the private sales of firearms?
I do not support red flag laws as they could be abused to remove firearms from an individual without due process. The red flag law is a gateway law to removing firearms against an individual’s Constitutional rights. If a person is a danger to themselves or others, then probable cause should be established for a mental health warrant or criminal charges.
A private owner of a firearm should not be responsible for checking the background of a buyer before selling a firearm. Only law enforcement and licensed firearms dealers should have access to FBI background information. Furthermore, citizens should not be required to perform background checks in order gift guns to their children or family.
The civil and criminal liability lies upon the gun owner not the seller.
I do not fully disagree that some additional regulation may need be imposed on private sales of firearms by legislature but that does not infringe on Constitutional rights.
